Offered here is a 1947-66 Exhibits Willie Mays Batting Pose Giants SGC 98 Gem Mint. This is the only card graded SGC 98 Gem Mint, and there are no examples graded higher.Issued annually from 1947 through 1966, this oversized card was printed on a heavy cardboard stock and was issued though several sources. Primarily, it was distributed through mechanical penny and nickel vending machines at drug stores and candy shops across the country. These machines used a series of mechanical functions to expel the cards and usually resulted in the cards being dispensed with roller marks and corner damage.The Exhibits issue, while accurately cataloged, does not define specific years for inclusion and/or distribution of players within the set, so there is no definitive date for the issuance of the Mays card. Could it have been prior to the issue of his rookie card? Was it during his rookie season? Perhaps in 1952? The ball-in-glove shoulder patch prominently displayed on the uniform shoulder of Mays in his Exhibits card image was only worn during Mays first few seasons with the Giants, including his rookie season!When talking about the scarcity of high grade vintage sports cards, many times the phrase one-of-one is used, but the truth is that an item is rarely a one-of-one.
